Anyone know the origin of the name?

Fray? What does it mean? I was told that Fray is probably a corruption of 'Frere' (brother). Does this seem likely?

ps I'm Jonathan Richard Fray born 18.7.68 Portsmouth. My family is form Wiltshire so I was interested to see Graces research turning up Frays in the 1500's there. One of my sisters (Elizabeth) lives in Cricklade.
