Looks very interesting and I will digest.
Philip WRIGHT at the end of his book 'Knibb the Notorious' speaks as though Ellis was a former slave or anyway black skinned. I have no more info than that but I suppose it's possible that he (or a forbear) took the name of his master. I have seen a copy Will of the Ellis who I assume is the one who married Ann KNIBB. The Will was proved in 1886.
