I have been through my files and have found some details that may be relevant to your branch of the family.
Firstly though I have been through my extracts from the indexes to births, deaths and marriages and noted the following were all registered in Wandsworth district. Some I assume are your Uncles and Aunts and wondered if you could confirm which as I know that there was an Alfred with family in the area as well as your Thomas Charles. I realise that this may be difficult as you might not have had much contact with your Fray relatives with you and your brother being born in the north and your father dying whilst you were so young.
Year Qtr Vol Page
1901 Sep Jack ( who died the same year) 1d 660
1903 Sep Percy Charles (birth registered in Lambeth but died in Sutton 1968) 1d 381
1905 Mar Hilda Maud 1d 613
1906 Sep Leonard George 1d 503
1907 Dec Arthur Joseph 1d 520
1910 Dec Thomas Reginald 1d 671
1910 Mar Sidney Albert (??? Son of Albert???)
1913 Jun Doris I (daughter of Alfred)
1916 Marjorie F (daughter of Alfred)
The 1881 census for 11 George Street Sutton (ref RG11 0759 76 78) gives some siblings for Thomas Charles. The census details are:
Name Rel Age Occupation Place of Birth
Thomas Fray Head 29 Carman Surrey Kingston
Jane Wife 31 Ewell
Emma Dau 6 Wimbledon
Francis Dau 4 Ewell
Thomas Son 2 Sutton
Alice Dau 8m Sutton
Henry Hamilton Lodger Widow 70 Cordwainer Kent
I assume you have the marriage certificate for Thomas and Jane (1874 Jun Epsom 2a 17).
I have looked up the Birth references for Thomas and Jane’s family
1875 Mar Emma Mary Kingston 2a 260
1878 Sep Thomas Charles Epsom 2a 3 (died Wandsworth 1962)
1880 Sep Alice Jane Epsom 2a 10
I haven’t got a Frances / Francis in my extracts from the indexes (I may have missed it or she may have been registered under a different name or not registered at all).
There are a further two births registered in Epsom.
1882 Jun George Arthur Epsom 2a 12 (died Wandsworth 1945)
1884 Sep James Albert Epsom 2a 10 (died Surrey NE 1959)
I have records of a James Albert who enlisted into the army at age 14 that may be the James Albert above. His army record shows that he was a musician in the Notts and Derby Reg. He married at Shardlow in 1907 to Edith Eliz Freason, had two daughters Frances born 1908 in Derby and Dorothy born 1910 in Fermoy. He was re-engaged in 1910, promoted 1914 and discharged 1917. The records show that he was 4ft 8 and 5/8 inches tall with a 28 ˝ inch chest, was of dark complexion with dark brown eyes and black hair. He had a mole on the back of his neck and scars to his head and right arm. His other named relatives are
Father - Thomas deceased
Mother – Lote(?) Wayford St, Battersea Chelsea
Brother - Thomas ? Station St, Abbey Road, R????l
19 Gatesbury Road, Wandsworth
It isn’t clear whether this was at enlistment or discharge. I would be interested to know if you have any links to these addresses or whether Thomas re married Lote (Charlotte?).
There are copies of some of the parish registers for Kingston on Thames at the local history centre in Woking from which I have noted two relevant baptisms
Apr 4 1847 William son of James and Mary Ann Fray of Kingston Waterman
Jul 30 1848 Charles John son of James and Mary Ann Fray of Kingston Labourer (born 28 Jun 1848)
William died age 6months.
The IGI also gives James son of James and Mary Ann baptised 6 Apr 1845 who also died as a child.
In the indexes to births there are several in Kingston.
John 1850 Sep IV 238
James 1852 Dec 2a 160
Thomas 1855 Jun 2a 161 *********
Elizabeth Jane 1857 Mar 2a 168
George 1858 Dec 2a 177
Walter James Pedder 1863 Sep 2a 219
If you are able to obtain the certificate for Thomas you should be able to confirm his mother and her maiden name. If you are very lucky the family may appear in the census for 1851 / 1861 at the address on the certificate. If like most of my own London ancestors yours lived in rented accommodation and moved frequently, then you may need to buy other certificates to get addresses closer to the census years or to hope that the census has been indexed. If not then it is a long job to work your way through and all to get James’s place of birth!
James may well have been born in Kingston as there had been Fray’s in the area a couple of centuries earlier and there were still a few around (IGI James John son of James and Elizabeth bapt 26 May 1820) but it was a era when there was a lot of movement around the country.
If this is the sort of information you were looking for then I may be able to expand some areas further. If you can add to my knowledge …addresses, occupations etc then I would be extremely grateful.
Grace Beagley (nee Fray)
