Dennis - John Daniel Fredd is my great-great grandfather--SORTA!!! I don't know if he and Hester had any children of their own, but they "adopted" my great grandfather who was born in Michigan in 1876. They are on the 1880 Census for Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. They lived at 120 East Gay Street. John D. Fredd was listed as head of household; his age is listed as "37", but he was born in 1845 so he would have been 35. He was a life insurance agent. Hester, his wife, was 35 and William E. "stepson" was 4 years old. Saide Swan, age 20/born Virginia, was a niece living with them.
As an insurance agent, we think that John traveled around a bit. John and Hester were friends/neighbors (we really don't know) with William Edward's (Willie's) parents - the Glespies (Gillespies, not sure of spelling?). I know this because I have a copy of a letter that was written by "Aunt Mary" Millhone (John's sister) to Willie right after John Fredd died in California. In that letter, she talks to Willie about "Brother John" and asks questions about John's death at the soldier's home in California, sending flowers, what a good man Brother John was, lots of other things, AND then she explains to Willie that his parents were the Glespies. When Mrs. Glespie was about to give birth, she asked Hester that if anything happened to her, would she and John take the baby and raise it. Mrs. Glespie died and when Willie was seven days old, he was taken to Hester and John. mr Glespie left (don't know where?) and died within three months. It seems that the Glespies had no family. mrs. Glespie was from a wealthy English family and her family did not apprpove of Mr. Glespie - so they came to America. Aunt Mary explained to Willie that she was telling him this because she knew that Brother John would not talk of such things and since Aunt Hess had passed on.
"Willie" grew up as William Edward Fredd, Sr., married Marie Louise Miller, and they had two sons. Willie is my great grandfather. He was quite a character - he and Marie were in show business and travelled alot. On Willie's marriage licence, John (his father) is listed as being his manager.
We had not researched the Fredd line (can you explain why some used Fred and there are just a few Fredds?). However, my Mom mentioned it last night and we decided to look into it and MAYBE find out something more about the Glespies. We know nothing of them except for what was in the letter (no first names, ages, correct spelling --- the letter is very difficult to read).
Would appreciate hearing from you!
