Leigh,

I had suspected, but could not proved that John's middle name was Daniel. Your response helps a LOT!

John D. Fred is a descendant of the Quaker John Fredd who arrived in Chester Co., PA in 1713 from Ireland. The Fred's that live in Chester Co. today, still spell their name with two d's. According to my Computer (I can never figure out past 1st cousin on my own), John is my 1st Cousin 3 removed.

John's grandson, Joseph, was disowned by the Quakers in 1766. Several years later, in 1769, he moved to Loudon Co, VA and bought a farm. This line of Fred's has dropped the second D and rarely spell their surname Fredd. Loudon Co. still has some Fred's and they spell their surname without the second D.

Joseph's grandson (& John D Fred's grandfather), John S. Fred, moved to Belmont Co., OH in 1814. I don't recall seeing any Fred records in the Belmont County Courthouse with Fred spelled with the second D. (Even in John D. Fred's marriage record it was spelled with one D.)

According to family history handed down to me, John D. Fred was a Civil War Veteran on the Union side. I also have several pictures of him that I have scanned if you are interested.

Dennis
