My grandfather was John H Benson, the Newport Artisan to whom Freedley left a bequest - partly in the form of a small fund of money "to be used for artistic purposes" and also a large group of paintings and works on paper. Some of this work ultimately went to the Newport Art Association, but there is still quite a bit of it in the family. I have two portraits, my brother has three, a cousin has one and my father and uncle each have two. They are wonderful paintings, very stylized and of the period in which they were painted. He ought to be discovered. I have never understood why nobody seems to know about the guy.
