MRS. PATRICK (MARGARET) FREEHILL
March 27, 1908
On Tuesday, March 17, 1908 at one o'clock a.m., occurred the death of Mrs. Patrick Freehill, Sr., at her home in Germanville township, about eight miles southeast of Strawn, after a very short illness, death being due to pneumonia. While she had not enjoyed perfect health for some years, yet the news of her death came as a surprise to many, as it was not generally known that she was suffering any critical illness other than the debilities due to old age.
Her maiden name was Margaret Currigan, sister of Peter Currigan, deceased, and aunt of Michael Currigan, formerly of this city, now a resident of Fairbury. She was born seventy-nine years ago at Westport, County Mayo, Ireland. She left her native land in early girlhood, locating in Pennsylvania, after a short time going to Kentucky, and finally to Chicago, where on May 23, 1859, she was married to Patrick Freehill. They came at once to Fairbury, where they resided several years, later living on a farm north of that place. In 1869 they moved to Germanville, where they have since resided, the homestead where the wife passed away being the nucleus of the large land interest of which the pioneer husband enjoys the possession at present.
Mrs. Freehill was the mother of four sons and two daughters, all of whom were with her in her last illness, except her youngest daughter, Bridget A., who preceded her mother into eternal life several years ago. The bereaved family consists of the aged husband and following children; Michael A., Peter P., James F. and Patrick H. of Germanville, and Mrs. Frank Somers of Kankakee. There are thirty-three grandchildren.
The funeral was held from St. Rose's Catholic church at Strawn, of which she was a member, on Thursday, March 19, at 10 o'clock a.m., Rev. D. Harrington officiating, and a requiem high mass was sung by St. Rose's church choir, after which the remains were interred in the family lot in st. Rose's cemetery, her four sons being the pall-bearers.
