Prayers have been answered! Artemissa Freeland was my great grandmother. She was the daughter of Howell Eldridge Freeland and Zelphia CAMPBELL. Artemissa's first marriage was to William WATTS s/o Joseph WATTS and Nancy Charlotte MC ENTIRE MOSS. Artemissa and William were enumerated on the 1860 Cherokee Co NC census. Their surviving child Joseph Howell WATTS was born that year. William died in the Civil War on 4 Apr 1863. By 1870, Artemissa had married my great grandfather William Leander SUTTON, and they were enumerated on the Polk Co TN census.

It has been presumed that Artemissa married William Watts in Polk Co TN where her family had lived since 1840. The records for that county are missing. It's great to have an actual date. Where has it been?

Also, several members of the Freeland family applied *unsuccessfully* in the 1890s for citizenship in the Cherokee Nation claiming through their CAMPBELL line. As far as I know, only Logan Freeland the son of Cordelia TAYLOR, second wife of Henry C. Freeland, was admitted through his mother and not his Freeland father.
Please share any new information. This is a wonderful surprise.
