Do you have the names of any wives or the children of the men you named? That might help point to the right line in the book on descendants of Edmund FREEMAN.The Isaac FREEMAN who m. Ann SMETHURST or his brother Edmund FREEMAN, in the 1700's captured a Spanish galleon.["Memoir of Quincy," & "Miss HINCKLEY of Lowell, MA"] The first says that, in 1748, Isaac FREEMAN in the "Bethel," captured 161 chests of silver and two chests of gold. The second says that Edmund, during the French Revolution, captured a Spanish galleon and became rich. This family would be that of Isaac FREEMAN (ca. 1685 - 173_), who m. 16 Mar. 1715/6, Bethia STURGIS (19 F 1695/6 - by 8 Aug. 1769), d/o James STURGIS & Rebecca THACHER. Young Bethia was courted by both Isaac FREEMAN & Job GORHAM.After the death of her first husband, Bethia m2. Job GORHAM, who had remained single.
Isaac & Bethia had
Isaac FREEMAN, b. ca. 1718, m. 14 Aug. 1746, Marblehead, Ann SMETHURST
Edmund, b. ca. 1720, widow m. Capt. PETE of the Br. Provinces.
James (5 N 1728, Fairfield, CT - 27 May 1763) m. Deborah TASKER, d/o John, Esq., of Marblehead.
David (ca. 1731, Fairfield, CT - by 11 July 1769) m. 1753, Abigail DAVIS of Barnstable, MA.
Of the sons in this family, Isaac (& Ann) are only known to have had a son Edmund, b. 15 Oct. 1750, Marblehead.Edmund is known to have had a son (unnamed in the book).James & Deborah's only child known to have issue was dau. Deborah, b. 13 S 1763, m. 4 N 1783, Joseph HINCKLEY.David apparently had only a son Thomas David FREEMAN, who may have been the lieutenant of the 54th Rgt., reported 28 Aug. 1780, "NY Gazette," asas d. & bu. Monday. If that is correct, his mother never knew what happened to him, as she left her estate in 1788 to others "in case my son Thomas D. does not return."
James STURGIS could be the source of the name James, and James FREEMAN, b. 1728, could have had a son in 1749.The unknown son of Edmund could be yours. Also, it would be unlikely that the older brothers did not have other children.Mrs. Sarah FREEMAN (wid/o Edmund) left legacies to "the four sons of my son Isaac, decd."
If this is the right line, there is no discrepancy in calling your line descendants of Edmund FREEMAN.There were five Edmunds in a row in my line. The immigrant was the second Edmund FREEMAN (bpt. 25 July 1596, Pulborough, Sussex - inv. 4 Oct. 1682, Sandwich, MA) of Edmund [1570 - bu. 6 Je. 1623, Pulborough], of John, bu. 2 May 1629, Pulborough.
Edmund FREEMAN (Je. 1657 - 10 Dec. 1717, of John [bpt. 28 Jan. 1626/7, Billingshurst, Sussex - 28 Oct. 1719] of the immigrant Edmund) m1. 1677, Ruth MERRICK; m2. Sarah MAYO {the above widow who named four grandsons, s/o son Isaac}.
You have lots of interesting clues to prove!
