John Freeman, toll bridge Screven Ga,Rev. War, Miller
Hi, I am looking for information about John Freeman b possibly 1733 SC died about 1800 Screven Co Ga. He owned and operated a toll bridge in Screven Co which was burned during the Battle of Brier Creek in Mar 1779 during the Revolutionary War. I am interested particularly in the Miller family which was also connected with this bridge, which is sometimes referred to as the Freeman-Miller Bridge.
John had a daughter named Sarah who, when she died in 1843,apparently had an heir named William Miller, "her son." Sarah married Solomon Kemp Jr in 1799, and I can find no information about a previous marriage. From what I have been told, after the bridge burned, there was a Miller's Ferry which was then used to ford the river/creek. There was a deed from 1800 in which a William Miller deeded the land known as "Miller's Ferry" to a John Freeman.
I would love to hear from anyone who knows anything about this Freeman family, or about the bridge, or about the Millers or the Kemps.
