Philip Freeman of Westmoreland County, PA
One of the bad things about the internet is that poor research travels fast.
For those researchers of Philip Freeman of Westmoreland County 1743-1829, please, please do not take seriously the information I have seen posted on the internet that his parents are George Freeman of Virginia and his wife Ann Cox.It is not true.In fact it appears to be the work of someone who assumed that his father's name had to be George (of which there is no evidence) and this one seemed to fit the time from so it had to be good.It is not.
This George Freeman's father was also George Freeman (born 1680 died 1735) who married Jane Holman.Among their children was Holman Freeman who married Sarah Ann Cox (also known as Sallie or Sallie Ann). They had a number of children, including a George, who also had a son called George. This family moved to Georgia about 1774 and the family is well documented. No Philips.
Another son of George born 1680 was George born 1712.This son married in 1730 but the wife's name is unknown. They had three children, George born 1732, Holy and John -- no Philips.George died in 1738 at the early age of 26. Some references give his wife's death as the same year.
This George Freeman who people are crediting with being PHilip's father died four or five years before he was born.Ann Cox was married to his brother, not to this George.
Please, everybody, put this to bed along with the myth about Philip being married to someone named Mary Barbara Bonjour, who never existed.
I have spent the last 15 years researching Philip Freeman - if you want to know just about anything about him, I'll be happy to share everything I have - and citations for where I found it.
