Freestone Family in Canada
I have just recently taken an interest in learning more about my family history, and thankfully through the efforts of my only surviving senior relative, my Aunt, Dora Bye of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada,....(who will be celebrating her 100th Birthday at the beginning of March, 2010), reinforced by a wealth of information which was in my Father's possessions, I have been fortunate to have assembled a snapshot of the Freestone Family history.
My name is Brian James Freestone and my Brother, David John and I live in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
I would now like to share the following information for the benefit of anyone who would have equal interest.Possibly the names will strike a cord with someone who would then in tern fill in the blanks for us.
In presenting this information, I will work backwards from the present to the past.
As mentioned, my Aunt Dora Freestone (married name "Bye") is the only surviving member of my Father's original family. My Father's name was John (Jack) Robert Freestone and he unfortunatley passed away on March 15th, 2005. He was the youngest of 8 children of Charles and Annie Elizabeth Freestone orginally of, Darlington area of England (as that was where my Father was born on September 1st, 1912).
Dad had 7 siblings which I will record in order of birth. My Grandparents, Charles & Annie Elizabeth were married on February 5th, 1896 in St. John's Church, Parish of Egremont, Cumberland, England.
My eldest Aunt, Hannah Mary (who went by the name of Mary)was born in 1897, a year after the wedding of her parents, when I believe Annie Elizabeth was 21 years of age.
Mary, lived her marreid life in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, with her husband, Charles Wright. Mary passed away in 1999, just shy of her 103rd birthday.
The next child in line was Charles, born in 1896, who was the first to move to Canada from England in the 1913 timeframe, settling briefly in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It was on his encouragement that he arranged for my Grandmother, Annie Elizabeth, to bring the family to settle in Canada. My Grandmother, Annie Elizabeth, as a single Mother brought her entire family to Winnipeg in 1914/15 timeframe (not exactly certain as to what the date of the passage to Canada was). My Grandfather, Charles, had apparently abandoned the family in England, so my Grandmother made the journey alone with the children.
Charles Junior, once the family was settled in Winnipeg, at some point left Winnipeg and moved to Los Angeles, California, USA,where he settled and lived the balance of his life. He passed away at the age of 92 in 1988 in Los Angeles.
Pat was the next daughter who passed away in 1988 as well.
Violet Annie was the next sibling, who passed away in England at only three (3) weeks of age.
Tom Freestone was the 5th child, and he passed away in 1948, I believe in Ontario, Canada.
Ethel(?) also passed away at the very young age of eight (8), in England.
Dora May was the 7th child, who is fortunately still with us and as mentioned previously, is living in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and will be celebrating her 100th Birthday at the beginning of March 2010.
Finally, our Father, John Robert, who lived here in West Vancouver until passing away on March 15th, 2005 at the age of 92.
I have also been extremely fortunate to have found, in Dad's possessions, a sheet of paper prepared at some point decades ago, by Annie Elizabeth (his Mother),with details of Annie Elizabeth's in-laws, her husband Charles parents, who then would have been our (David & my) Great Grandparents, and their family of 17 children (although apparently they had had 17 children in total, but only 12 have been listed leading Dora and I to believe that the other five may have died either at birth or during pregency as they weren't recorded).
My Great Grandparents, our Father's, Grandparents, Horace Freestone and Hannah (Ivison) Freestone were married in 1854 with their marriage solemmized at St. George's Church in the Parish of Sheffield, in the County of York, England.
Horrace was born in Bangor, England, March, 1819 and Hannah wasborn in Carlisle,England, April 28th, 1833. My Great Great Grandfather's name was Thomas Freestone and he apparently was registered on the Marriage Certificate as a Gardener; with Hannah's Father, John Ivison, as a Clock & Watch maker.
The roster of 12 children included :
* Alice Freestone, born Astly (?) Green, May 6th, 1854
* Thomas Ivison Freestone, born Sheffield, November 5th, 1855
* Annie Freestone, born Hyldsly (?), April 16th, 1859
* Harry Freestone, born Sheffield, May 3rd, 1861
* Mary Ann Freestone, born Cockermouth, May 4th, 1863
* Frederick Spencer Freestone, born Papcastle(?), March 9th, 1865
* Anna Maria Freestone, born Cockermouth, March 8th, 1867
* John Freestone, born Crosly, born November 19th, 1868
* Frances Freestone, born Crosley, June 12th, 1870
* William Freestone, born Crosley, August 21st, 1871
* Jane Ellen Freestone, born Carlisle, October 26th, 1874
*Charles Freestone, born Spindleston, August 7th, 1877
(Charles would have been our further Grandfather)
Horrace Freestone died on September 1st, 1885 in Workington, England. Hannah died February 6th, 1910, in Egremont, England.
I turst that this analysis has been invaluable for anyone wanting to explore the lineage of this branch of the Freestone family tree, within the past 100+ years. If you can lend more insight into any particular element of the story, it would be tremendously appreciated...!
Thank you for taking the time to read through the history as presented.
