Jesee W. Friar "killed by the cars" 1914 Missouri

The following two records were found in a Hendrix-Ware family Bible. I believe these folks lived near Stanton, Missouri.

Jesse W. Friar was killed by the cars on September 19, 1914.

Jesse Hendrix was killed by the cars on December 5, 1863.

What does "killed by the cars" mean?
