He's back in WEST CARROLL PARISH,LA in 1850 where he had married a second time, to ELIZABETH CATHERINE EVANS. [FIRST WIFE UNKNOWN] In 1851, James and his family: his Mother-in-law [LOUISA T. HUMPHREYS]and her mother: SARAH EVANS-HUMPHREYS had traveled to settle in LEON CO,TX; where either his son, JOHN THOMAS or his Father-in-law had received a land grant of 320 acres in 1852 which was a couple of miles north of present day Concord,TX.According to his Grant #31456, it signifys that he was in TX during the time Texas was a Republic.He farmed the land and possibly some of the Evans land.Then about 2yrs later he transferred his 320 acre Grant to J.J. Underwood. He continued farming in Leon County, which may have been on public lands or on lands of some of the Evans family's.In March of 1862, at the age of 42, he joined the Confederate Army, Company "C" 5th Regiment, Hood's Brigade.his son Henry Clay from his first wife also joined.After the Civil War James returned to Leon County and resumed farming and mechanical work.In 1871 he was granted 160 acres of land a mile or so outside of Jewett, toward present day, Donie.His brother-in-law Francis Marion Evans was also granted an adjoining 160 acres, as well as, Willis L. Selman, who was the husband of Margaret Evans.Margaret was related to Elizabeth and Francis Evans.The Fryer family did quite a bit of traveling between crops, to Old Fort Griffin on the Clear Fork of the Brazos River, to hunt buffalo.On one of these trips their daughter Margaret Fryer was shot in the leg during an indian attack and had a limp for the rest of her life.James would later work as a laborer on the construction of the first building in Jewett and later on construction of the State Capitol in Austin in the late 1880's.James was in his late 60's.
