I have lots of information about the Fryer family but unfortunately Suzanne's e-mail address is out of date.
Mary Jane Fryer's parents were Richard Fryer (b1837, Morton Tinmouth, County Durham, England) and Agnes Coates (b c1837, Gunnerside, North Yorkshire, England). They had the following children:
John b1858, Thomas b1861, Elizabeth b1863, George b1865, Richard b1867, Frederick b1869, Sarah b1870, Charles b1872, Joseph William b1874, & Selina b1876. They resided in Darlington, County Durham at the time of the 1861 to 1901 census.
I understand that John Fryer emigrated to South Africa in the mid 1880's and worked there as a miner in the Benoni district, Cape Province. I have also confirmed that Mary Jane Fryer emigrated to Canada with her husband William Lewis. My great-grandfather, Thomas Fryer emigrated to Australia in 1885 and married Fanny Matthews in Sydney, 1890. Elizabeth, George, Richard, Frederick, Sarah & Joseph William appear to have remained in England throughout their lives. I have been unable to locate any details for Charles and Selina after 1901.
I have located South African records for Richard Lewis (b1883), son of Mary Jane Fryer & William Lewis. His death notice advises he was a retired taxi driver and his date of death was 15/11/1944, Kimberley, Cape Province. He married Alice Fryer who I understand was his first cousin, daughter of John Fryer. However, I still need to confirm this information.
I would love to hear from Suzanne or anyone else who has an interest in this family.
