Military Historian seeks information on Irvin L Fuchs. An associate in Holland has just written to me with a photograph displaying a yellow "mae west" life jacket commonly worn by aviation personnel during WW2. Across the front of this vest is stencilled the name: IRVIN L. FUCHS LT 0-755314 My resources verify the Serial Number for this name, and also verifies: DOB:26JUL16 DOD:7JAN79 Time in Service is curious as it only lists the following time span: 20MAY42 thru 30SEP43. These birth and death dates correlate with the name in SSDI, which shows that the SSN was issued in OHIO. Searches in Ohio have turned up blank. Search of 1930 Census shows a likely hit for the FUCHS family in Newark, NJ. Family of William (47) and Helen (45) with sons Irvin (12) and William Jr. (9). They were resident at 68 Cabinet St. William Sr. was a carpenter. 1932 Newark City Directory shows a William employed at 1001 Broad St. (Without specification of trade or residence) The 1940 Newark Directory shows: Helen Fuchs, widow of William Fuchs, home at 311 New Street Irving (with a G) Fuchs, employed by the WPA, resides at 311 New Street William A., in USCCCorps, resides at 311 New Street SSDI does not have any listings for a William with DOB: 1921. Is it possible that William A. is still with us? My friend in Holland would like to know in what capacity IRVIN L. FUCHS served. He isn't selling anything---it is simply a matter of historical curiosity. Are you related to IRVIN or WILLIAM A. FUCHS? Anyone who would like to see a photo of the vest can email me directly at OHBERRY@aol.com. David R. Berry Dayton, OH Notify Administrator about this message?
