The name Fuentes (or de la Fuente) is of Provençal and Catalan origin and comes from the word "font". It is a topographic name for someone living near a source of water, so not everyone with this surname comes from one specific locality. Variations include: Hont (Provençal from Gascony), Lafont or Lafon, Lafond, Defont, Defond, Delafon, Delafont (all Provençal), Fons, Fonts and Lafont (Catalan), Fuente, Fuentes and Lafuente (Spain), Fonte and Fontes (Portugal). Diminutives include: Fontel, Fontelle and Fontin (Provençal), and Fontelles (Catalan).
