GeorgeFugate Family Line
Our branch of the Fugate Family descends from George and Martha Howell Fugate through Lewis, Vincent, Lewis Franklin, Luther and Wilbur. Martha's Family is identified back to William Howell in the early 1700's, but George's parents are unknown.
George and Martha named their children after their parents, as I assume was the custom, with all the children's names identifiable to either Howells in the Culpeter/Frederick/Fauquir County, Virginia area or Josias children or grandchildren.
One good possibility for George's parents is Benjamin Fugate, who was married to Hannah(often called Devers). In several locations Benjamin and Hannah are listed as having an un-named son and in another location Benjamin's birth is given as 1747.
George/Martha named their children:
1. Lewis after Martha's brother
2. Mary (Polly) after ???
3. Sarah (Sally) after ???
4. Katharine after Martha's sister or George's sister if Benjamin is his father
5. Leticia after Martha's mother
6. Zachariah possible after George's brother
7. Martin L. possible after George's brother
Another curious naming that could tie to Benjamin is George and Martha's grandson Vincent's naming a son Charles D. There are many more curious naming ties to Josias's children.
It is easy to follow George Fugate in Virginia by following his marriage to a Howelland his children and their marriages to the Ashby's, Berry's, Slayden's, Wm. Clift and the Wilsons , all from the same area of Virginia. So he certainly appears to be related to the Josias line, but how?
I'm just throwing this out for any thoughts from those of you who are much better at the naming patterns, etc. of the last half of the 1700's.
