Some of the families went to Hatteras, North Carolina. While others went to Carteret County and neighboring areas. If I can be of any assistance please let me know. I also have a couple of books on Portsmouth Island. They are called "Portsmouth Island-Short Stories, History" and "Portsmouth Island-OUter Banks Treasure" Both are excellent books.
