Schuyler Co., MO. .... Many white men visited the territory after 1820, but because of fear of the Indians who lived just across the border in Iowa, no permanent settlements were made until 1836 when David Floyd, Jefferson Fulcher, John Davis, Joseph Bradburn and Judge Samuel Eason located on land within present limits of the county.

The Fulcher Family Newsletter, written by Ethelyn Kennon in1973, states: "Jefferson FULCHER (was a) veteran of the War of 1812. Pvt. Battle of Thames. (He was) b. 23 Oct. 1787 in Amherst Co., VA d. 1859 Schuyler Co., MO. m. 16 June 1816 to Rachel Stephenson (also spelled Stevenson), b. 23 Sept 1793, dau. of Marquis and Sarah (Meek) Stephenson who came to Missouri, St. Louis County, before the Louisiana Purchase.

Ch. of Jefferson and Rachel as recorded in their family Bible and copied by their granddaughter, Jennie Caywood, were: Richard, John S., Ann, Silas Redman, Elizabeth Jane, Susan, Martha S.

Jefferson Fulcher bought land from Gen. Winlock in Hopkins Co, Ky. 1814, and sold it 1821. He came to Missouri in the spring of 1816, settled in Howard County on Thrall's Prairie, between present Rocheport and Harrisburg, close to and south of Harrisburg, just east of present Route J. The only settlement in 1816 was Ft. Head. His land fell into Boone County when that county was formed in 1820.

It is in Perche Township: SE Quarter of SW Quarter of Sec. 23, where Jefferson lived, also adjoining W half of SW Quarter, Sec. 24, Range 14, Township 50. This is from deed dated 19 June 1841 from Jefferson Fulcher and Rachel his wife, to David McQuitty, and recorded in Book L, p. 124, Boone Co. Ct. House. (David McQuitty m. Rachel's sister, Mary Stephenson.) The farm is known in the community as "the old Dud South place", owned in 1959 by W.M. Wilhite."

"In 1821 Lawrence Bass, David Jackson, John Gray and Jefferson Fulcher selected the site of Columbia as county seat of Boone County, asking that land be set aside for the building of a College. Jefferson also was on a commission in the building of the Court House. He moved in 1836 or 1837 to present Schuyler Co., Mo. which was not formed until 1845. (First records are found first in Macon Co., then in Adair Co. formed in 1841.)

He entered land for each of his three sons and four daughters. It was on a divide between present Glenwood and Queen City. The Wabash R.R. was later put through this area. At first his nearest trading places were at Canton and LaGrange on the Mississippi River. The first Methodist Church in Schuyler Co. was organized in Jefferson's home. In 1842 when Sarah Stephenson died he gave land for the Bethel Church and Cem. This Church is still active. He probably gave land for the first schoolhouse. His grandson, James M. Fulcher, pointed out the site to this writer, on land he inherited from Jefferson."
