Hi Joanna!

Thanks for your reply. My great-grandfather’s full name was James Tomas Jefferson Wilkerson, also known as “Dutch.” He was born on 18 May 1909 at Eupora, Webster County, Mississippi. His father was James T. Wilkerson and his mother was Doshie Fulcher (this comes from his application for a social security number). It is said in my family that Doshie was a full-blooded Creek Indian. James (Sr.), supposedly met Doshie while in Vicksburg. It seems there are several spellings for Doshie – also Docia and Doshia.

James T. Jefferson Wilkerson (Dutch) first appears on the 1910 census of Webster Co., MS. He is referred by his middle name, “Jefferson.” He had an older brother named William T. Wilkerson. James (Sr.) was 37 y/o and his mother Docia was 24 y/o. James (Sr.) indicates that this was his second marriage. William must have been a child from a prior marriage because he is 14 y/o.

A closer look at this census shows a neighbor named Henry S. Wilkerson (20y/o) whose mother was Susan Wilkerson (67 y/o; widowed). Henry’s full name was Henry Stonewall Jackson Wilkerson (from his WWI draft card). I think Henry and James were brothers and Susan was their mother.

It seems like the family next appears on the 1920 census of Choctaw Co., MS. James (Sr.) is now referred to as Jim and is 56 y/o. Docia is 36 y/o. A slight age difference from 1910, but not an uncommon finding in census records. In addition to their son James, there are the children Joseph T. (7 y/o), Mamie L. (sp?) (5 y/o) and Cora V. (1yr, 9 mo.).

My family doesn’t remember these names. We remember that James “Dutch” had a brother named Teate Nathanial (sp?) and a sister named Dank (I don’t know if this is her given name or a nickname). I have a couple photos of Dank but none of Teate.

James married Jessie Christine Blount (aka “Chris” of Judy”) on 06 Jun 1926 at Teoc, Carroll County, Mississippi. James and Judy had three children. They were Leon C. (20 Feb 1927 - 12 Apr 1985), Grace Virginia (04 Dec 1928 - 29 Nov 1991), and Samuel Lewis Wilkerson (25 May 1937 - Aug 1986).

Early in life, James worked as a farmer. He and Jessie Christine moved to Mobile in 1959 where he worked for the Mobile County Highway Department.

James retired from the Mobile County Highway Department in 1974. In 1975, they moved to Greenville, Mississippi.

James Wilkerson died 24 February 1980. Jessie Christine passed away on 27 June 1983. They are buried at the Indianola Memorial Cemetery, Sunflower County, Mississippi.

Researching this family has been difficult. The use of nicknames was very common. They were also very poor, which means they didn’t own land (no land records) and they moved a lot.
