I recently purchased two identical prints of a studio portrait of a young boy taken by Southers, San Francisco, CA. The mounts are identified on the backs in period handwriting:
"Charles N. Fulcher Jr.
at 14 months of age
This would place the subject's birth date in Jul 1902. I found him listed in the 1930 Census data for San Francisco (resided at 574 21st Avenue), San Francisco Co., CA. His father was born in Virginia and his mother was born in Tennessee. I found a Charles N. Fulcher listed in the 1870 Census data for the 1st District, Augusta Co., VA. This is likely the subject's father, born Jul 1865, the son of a farmer, Edwin A. Fulcher, born about 1840 in VA, and Emma A. (maiden name unknown), born about 1846 in VA. The subject's mother is likely Emma L. Fulcher (maiden name unknown), a widow listed in the 1920 and 1930 Census data for San Francisco (resided at 145 15th Avenue), San Francisco Co., CA, born about 1869 in TN.
Charles N. Fulcher, Jr. married Signe D. (maiden name unknown), born about 1905 in CA (both her parents were born in Norway). At the time of the 15 Apr 1930 enumeration, Charles was employed as a ? (adjective undecipherable) factory engineer and Signe worked as an insurance stenographer. Charles married a second time on 26 Nov 1970, to Ellissa Hoefflin McGill, born about 1904 (listed in the "All California Marriage Index, 1960-1985" on ancestry.com).
