George b abt 1755 in what is now Page Co., VA was the son of Johannes Voltz and his wife Anna Catharina who were first known to be in Virginia in 1758 when he was fined for appearing unaccoutered (without proper uniform/equipment) at a meeting of the Augusta Militia. No one knows where Johannes and Anna Catharina came from, although they are not the Johannes Voltz and Anna Catharina Zollhöferin who were m 1751 in Lancaster Co., PA. The Pennsylvania Johannes died 18 Feb 1801 and is buried in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster.
George's father Johannes wrote his will 18 Jul 1802 and it was proved in the June 1806 session of the Rockingham Co., VA court.[Rockingham Co., VA Will Book "A", p. 47] No wife is mentioned, so presumably Anna Catharina was dead before 1802. It is obvious from the text of the will that son George was already considering moving to Tennessee. Here is the text of the will (spacing added to assist with reading):
Will of Johannes Voltz:
In the name of God Amen, I John Fuls of Rockingham Co. and state of Virginia being weak in body but of sound in memory and understanding, blessed be God, calling to mind the mortality of my body and uncertainty of how I may continue with this present world I do by these presents acknowledge this my last will and testament As follows:
First I will my soul into the hands of allmighty god who gave it and my body to be buried in a Christian manner and that all my lawful debts be paid out of my personal estate.
I will to my eldest son John the place he now lives on together with all the improvements such as a quanity as maybe included the lower part of my tract containing one hundred and nineteen acres adjoining the county line to an agreed line made between him and his brother Sabastian by paying eighty pounds to his sisters to be equally divided among them all to be paid in six years.
To my son Sebastian, I will the place he now lives on with all the usual improvements therof what ever quanity may be included in the agreement made between him and his brother John before mention to another agreed line made between him and his brother -Phillip by paying forty pounds to his sisters to be equally divided among them all and to be paid in six years.
To my son Phillip I will the place he now lives on that is my home- - - - - - - - from the agreed line made between him - - - - - - - - - - and his brother David by paying one hundred pounds to his sisters to be equally divided among them all to be paid in seven years.
Fourth to my son David, I will the land he now lives on all contained between the agreed line between him and his brother Phillip unto the line between my above mentioned tract of five hundred and nineteen acres and another tract of wood land containing ninety nine acres and one half acre of said woodland opposite to his -----? at the place called the suck by paying fifteen pounds to his sisters to be equally divided among them all to be paid in six years.
and I to my son Jacob I will my tract of woodland of 99 acres and
to my son George I will the place he now lives on on the other side of the river containing *unreadable* acres and in case he should not hold said land, each one of his are to pay to said George fifteen pounds to be paid in five years only Jacob to pay only seven pounds ten shillings but if he hold the land he shall pay thirty pounds to equally divided among all his sisters and to be paid in six years and to his brothers to pay the sums they were to pay and in case he shall not hold the land to their sisters to be equally divided among them all and that in six years and as for all my movable *unreadable* -------------------children sons & daughters and son Sabastian my executor of my last will - - - - and testament which I identify with my hand & seal this 18th. day of July - - - - *unreadable*
