Fultz Family

Fultz is the Americanized spelling of the German Volz; Fultz, Fults, Fulce, Fulks, etc.
Name first found in Mecklenburg and Pomerania, Germany, but genealogy of some of the Fultz ancestors show that they came from Alsace region of France, which used to belong to Germany.

Fultz Narrative

Obadiah Fultz [1760-1844] and Martha (Blankenship) Fultz
Obadiah Fultz was born around 1760 in Virginia and died around 1844 in KY. He was married to Martha Blankenship [ca 1775 VA - KY] on Jan. 28, 1840 [death??], in Carter Co, KY. Martha's Father was Joseph Blankenship and her Mother was Phoebe Summerfield.
They had 9 children:1) John Fultz (ca 1790 in VA) who married Dicy Sloan; 2) Priscilla (Fultz) Gollohew (ca 1792 in VA) who married Peter Gollohew; 3) Joseph Fultz (ca 1794, ca- Dec 1851) who married Elizabeth Smith; 4) Hezakiah Fultz (ca 1797 in VA) who married: Jane [Virginia McTamin] Fultz (ca 1798); 5) Arthur Fultz (ca 1797 VA) who married 3 times: 1st wife ?Wallace; 2nd wife) Rachel McLaughlin 3rd wife) Rachel Presley; 6) Elizabeth (Fultz) Buckner (ca 1810 VA, 21 Jan 1875 in Carter Co, KY) who married Overton Buckner; 7) Robert H Fultz (born 7/1805 VA died 1/20/1888 San Diego, CA) who married Elizabeth Holland; 8) Wesley Fantley Fultz ( born Aug 15, 1815, Russell Co, VA died June 29, 1887 in Wesleyville, Carter Co, KY) who married Sylvia Stamper, daughter of John Stamper and Sarah Stamper; 9) Ralph Fultz who married Mary Clark.
The biography of Waldo Fantley Fultz says his great grandfather, "Obadiah Fultz, was an Alsatian, from Alsace, a region of France, formerly belonging to Germany], born 1728. He came to America in 1775 and proved his loyalty to the country of his adoption by gallant service in the Continental Army. After the Revolutionary War he migrated from Virginia to Kentucky, casting in his lot with the early settlers of Buffalo Creek, and there passed away in 1817."
No record of Revolutionary War service by an Obadiah Fulks has been found in the National Archives. The dates given could indicate that one generation was skipped. The Alsatian could have been born 1728, but it was his son, Obadiah, born 1765 according to the 1830 Kentucky census, who married Martha Blankenship, daughter of Joseph, on 16 October 1787, in Bedford County, Virginia. Many of the Fultzes settled along Buffalo Creek in Carter County, Kentucky, but not as early as 1817.
Several descendants have repeated the story that the Fulkses came from Pennsylvania. The Small Grains by M. C. Carleton says, "In 1862, in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, Abraham Fultz, while passing through a field of Lancaster wheat, which is an awned variety, found three spikes of awnless wheat. He sowed the seed from these spikes the same year and continued sowing a larger amount each year until he obtained sufficient seed to distribute it pretty well over the country." No connection with that Abraham is known but many of the immigrants did land in Pennsylvania and, after a time, came down the Shenandoah Valley into Virginia.
Hezakiah Fultz and Jane [Virginia McTamin] Fultz line.
Hezakiah Fultz was born around 1797. He married Jane Virginia (McTamin). The 1840 census shows Hezakiah Fultz (ca 1797) living in Greenup, KY [on WV border]. He is the only one listed in the census. The1850 census shows Hezakiah Fultz and his wife, Jane Virginia (McTamin) Fultz (ca 1798) living in Greenup, KY with 10 children: 1) William Fultz (ca1826 KY - ?); 2) Obadiah Fultz (ca1828 KY - ?); 3) James Fultz (ca1832 KY - ?); 4) Matilda (Fultz) Sezar (ca1835 KY - ?) who married Bates SEZAR; 5) Milton Fultz (ca1838 KY - ?) who married A. Leuvey; 6) Martha Jane Fultz (ca1839 KY - ?); 7) Hiram Fultz (ca1845 KY - ?) who married Mary Ann Boggs; 8) Hezekiah Fultz (ca1847 KY - ?) who married Judy Keetin; 9) Delila Fultz (ca1848 KY - ?); and 10) Anna Fultz (ca1850 KY - ?).

Obediah and Frances A (Sherman) Fultz line
Obediah Fultz was born around 1828 in KY. He married Frances A. Sherman from NC. They had 5 children: 1) Jasper [1850]; William Harrison [1854], Milton [1856], Elizabeth [1859] and Charles Obediah [1873]. The 1860 census shows the family living in Cattletsburg, Boyd Co, KY [on border with WV]. Obadiah Fultz is 35 [?KY] [1825], Franky A [=Frances] 23 from NC [1837]; Jasper 10 [1850]; Harrison 6 [1854]; Milton 4 [1856] and Elizabeth 1 [1859].

The 1870 census shows the family still living in, Catlettsburg, Boyd Co, KY.
Obediah Fulle [=Fultz] 44 [1825-6] KY; Frances A. Fultz 36 [1834], NC; William H. Fultz 14 [1856], KY; Milton Fultz 12 [1858], KY; Hezakiah Fultz 5 [1865]; Sarah A. Fultz 3 [1867]; Elizabeth Fultz 1 [1869], KY. Also listed in the 1870 census as part of the household are: Jasper Shepherd 13 (laborer); Virginia Futhey 68 midwife; Deliliah Fithey 19 years old. The 1870 census shows a Sarah A. Fultz abt 1868 living in Greenup, KY. Sometime between 1870 and 1873 the family moved to Ohio where Charles Obediah was born in 1873.

The 1880 census has a Obediah Fultz born in KY and living in Carter, KY, but his age is given as 50 years old (DOB =1830) which is 5 years older than his age given in the 1870 census. He is married to Eloiza Fults 40 [1840], born in MI who is 6 years younger than Frances A who was born in NC. Eloiza's father was born in Ireland and her mother in OH. However, the names and birthdates of the children listed in the census match well the Obediah and Frances A Fultz children: Hezakiah Fults 15 [1865] OH; Sarah Fults 12 [1868]; and Obediah [=Charles Obediah] Fults 8 [1872], OH. Also listed as 4 stepchildren, presumably from Eloiza's first marriage: 1) William Smith 23 [1857], OH, stepson, father OH, mother MI; 2) John Smith 20 [1860], OH, stepson, in census. Father OH, mother MI; 3) Pheba Jane Smith 18, stepdaughter, WV; Father OH, mother MI; and 4) Martha E. Smith, 13 WV; Father OH, mother MI.
