A nice story but has nothing to do with the origins of the name. The first Funkhousers in America spelled their name "Fankhauser"- Johannes, Jacob and Christian, were in Virginia by 1737 and for several generations signed their names as "Fankhauser" but pronounced "Funkhouser".The name is Swiss and orginated in the farm called "Fankhaus" near the Town of Trub in the Emmenthal Valley of the Canton of Bern. The farm got its name from he verb "Fangen" to capture. There were pits and traps for bears which preyed on livestock and so the farm house that stood there became known as the FAnkhaus and later people living there were Fankhausers. The name is quite extensive throughout that part of Switzerland.
