FOOS (Foss, Fuss, Fuse), John: 1824 - ?

1824
John was born about 1824 in Bavaria. His parents are not known. Sometime before the 1850 census was taken, John married Sophia, maiden name unknown. They had the following children:

       Anna, born 1853 in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Maryland.

       Charles, born 1854 in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Maryland. He married Nellie B. ROACH.

       Mary, born 1856 in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Maryland.

       John A., born 1859 in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Maryland.

1850
In the 1850 census for Ward 16, Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Maryland, John appeared as John FOOS, on lines 18 and 19, page number not given. He was a 33-year-old white male Book-crimper, born in Germany. His wife, Sophia, appeared as a 24-year-old white female, born in Germany.

Charles FUSE/FUSS/FOSS was born in Maryland in 1854.

About 1877, he married Nellie ROACH. They had the following children:

       Charles, born 1878 in Washington D.C

       Marie Agnes, born November 1879 in Washington DC. She married James William HOFFMAN. (These are my grandparents.)

       Anna G., born in Washington DC. She married Joseph Marion SMITH.

1860
In the 1860 census for Ward 12, Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Maryland, Charles was found as Charles FOSS, 6-year-old son of John and Sophia FOSS, born in Maryland, attending school. Others in the household were: John, 45-year-old white male head of household, personal estate valued at $1000, born in Bavaria; Sophia, his 33-year-old wife, born in Prussia; Anna 7-year-old white female, born in Maryland, attending school; Mary, 4-year-old white female born in Maryland; John, 8-month-old white male, born in Maryland.

1870
Charles was enumerated in this census as Charles FOSS, in the second Ward, Washington City, Washington DC. He was a 16-year-old single white male apprentice paper hanger, living in his parents’ household. He was born in Maryland, his father in Bavaria, his mother in Prussia. Charles could not write. Others in the household were John FOSS, 56-year-old married white male book crimper , head-of household with real estate valued at $2500, could not write, born in Bavaria; Sophia FOSS, wife, 45 -year-old married white female, could not write, born in Prussia; John A. FOSS, son, 10 -year-old single white male born in Maryland, who could not write.

1880
In the 1880 census for Washington City, Washington DC, Charles was found as Charles FUSS, a 26-year-old married white male head of household, living at 107 Four and one-half Street, Southwest. He worked as a paperhanger who could not write. Charles was born in Maryland, his father in Bavaria, his mother in Westphalia. Charles’ wife and two children also lived in the home: Nellie, 24-year-old single white female keeping house, born in Maryland, parents born in Ireland; Charles, 2, and Mary, 6 months (Marie), born in D.C., parents born in Maryland.

Charles’ parents and brother are enumerated in the preceding household. John FUSS is a 63-year-old married head of household, working as an ice cream man. He could not read. He and his parents were born in Bavaria. Sophia, his wife was a 54-year-old married white female, keeping house. Sophia could not read. She and her parents were born in Westphalia. Their son, John A., 20, was a cigar maker, born in Maryland. John also could not read.

Charles died or disappeared sometime between the 1880 census and 1889, when his widow/abandoned wife remarried.

FUSE, Marie Agnes: 1879 - 1918

Marie was born 13 November 1879 in Washington D.C. to Charles and Nellie Roach FUSE.

1880

1898
On 18 July 1898, Marie married James William HOFFMAN, son of William Griffin HOFFMAN and Agnes Bridget SHEEHAN. The marriage took place at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Washington D.C. Marie and James had the following children:

              William Jerome, born 13 Nov 1898 in Washington DC; died 2 August 1982 Mt. Rainier, Prince Georges County, Maryland. He married Clara D. OFENSTEIN.

              Marie Agnes, born 8 September 1900 in Washington DC; died 10 May 1980 in Mt. Rainier, Prince Georges County, Maryland. She married J. Francis ASHFORD.

              Anna May, born 29 March 1903 in Washington DC; died 31 August 1969 in Cheverly, Prince Georges County Maryland. She married Alfred Louis TIMBERLAKE.

              Helen Elizabeth, born 18 January 1906 in Brentwood, Prince Georges County, Maryland; died 12 October 1978 in Mt. Rainier, Prince Georges County, Maryland. She married Alden V. McDEVITT.

       Cecelia, born 8 May 1908 in Brentwood, Prince Georges County, Maryland; died        18 June 1984 in Silver Spring, Montgomery County, Maryland. She married Thomas ANGLIN.

       James Charles, born 18 May 1910 in Brentwood, Prince Georges County, Maryland; died 22 April 1985 in Bowie, Prince Georges County, Maryland. He married Eleanor Carroll BROWN.

       Joseph Daniel, born 8 December 1914 in Brentwood, Prince Georges County,        Maryland; died 28 June 1986 in Deale, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. He married Maureen Morgan.

1918
Marie died at home, Dewey Street (now 3401 Upshur Street), in Brentwood, Prince Georges County, Maryland, during the Great Flu Epidemic, leaving seven orphaned children, ages 4 to 20. Marie’s husband, James, never remarried.

John FUSS/FOSS/FOOS is a "new find". Would like to touch base with other researchers of this line.
