The problem you are facing is an age old one. What may have happened is your ancestor was not at home when the census taker came calling. So, the neighbor provided the information. Or, the census taker knew your ancestor, and just took a guess at the information.
Thus, everything is wrong. The census is not a good source document for birth dates it really should only be used as a guide in finding your ancestors, as you never know who provided the information to the census taker.
