Thanks for the clarification. It appears that there was confusion between the 26th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry and the 26th Battalion, Georgia Infantry. Company C of the 26th Battalion consisted of men primarily from Carroll County. The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors site at http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm does show a W.H. Parker in Company C, 26th Battalion, Georgia Infantry.

He could have very easily been in all three units. Company D, 3rd Regiment, Georgia State Troops, formed for the defense of the Georgia coast, was mustered in to service October 1861 to serve for six months and mustered out in April 1862. The 56th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry was formed a few weeks later, in May 1862 and was assigned to the Army of Tennessee. The 26th Battalion, Georgia Infantry was formed in September 1863. He may have been discharged from the 56th with a disabilty or illness, perhaps in the 56th's training camp at Camp McDonald near Marietta, Georgia, returned home to recover and then joined the 26th when it was formed.

You already have a transcription of the service record from the 56th Georgia although you probably are not aware of this.

In the mid-1950's, Lillian Henderson, the Director of Confederate Pension and Records Department that later became a part of the Georgia Archives, was given the task of compiling a multi-volume work entitled "Roster of the Confederate Soldiers of Georgia, 1861-1865." To accomplish this task she abstracted the compilied service records (CMSRs) of all soldiers in Georgia infantry regiments plus a very small number of infantry battalions, accounting for about one-third of aall soldiers who served in Georgia units.

What you have quoted, ie, "Parker, W. H.-Enlisted as a private in Co. D, 3d Regiment Ga. State Troops October 13, 1861. Mustered out at Savannah, Ga. April 20, 1862. Enlisted as a private in Co. B, 56th Regiment Ga. Inf. May 5,1862" is taken verbatim from Henderson's work. Since she provided no information after May 5, 1862 it would be safe to say that the CMSR has no further information.

Although there is no "smoking gun" of which I am aware, a case study could be made to show the probablity of this Willam H. Parker being the son of Stukely S. C. Parker and Julia Ann Williamson. The Parkers came to Carroll County from Jackson County, Georgia about 1834. They apparently left Carroll County after 1864.
