Ref: Horace Chase / Hiram Chase Hi Sharon: No, I am not related to the Chase family. My current project is to attempt to draw up a definitive list of those civil war veterans that have a connection to York, York County, Maine. The connection can be any one of the following: born in York, lived in York, buried in York, were recruited to fill the quota for York, volunteered in the name of York and received a "bounty" from York, etc. Chase is a common name here in York. Two Chase brothers, Charles E and Josiah, served in two Maine infantry regiments. Horace B(!) Chase is shown as a recruit from York in the Maine Adj. General's report, vol 1, 1864 / 65. I am currently interpreting this to mean that he was recruited to fill the quota since the York Town Report for the fiscal year ending in March 1865 shows that a Horace G(!) Chase received a bounty of $200.00 for volunteering. Unfortunately I do not know where Horace lived in 1860. I suspect that he is somehow related to the two brothers referenced. Perhaps they were cousins. It is interesting to note that Horace and Charles enlisted in the same military unit at about the same time. Do you have a copy of the Pension Index card for Horace / Hiram. It shows the relevant file numbes for both his initial pension filing and for his widow's filing? If you wish, I can eMail it to you separately. I have purchased copies of pension files from the NARA. These are not state specific but veteran specific. I only purchase such files for my direct relatives so if you do receive some information regarding Horace, I would love to see it. Regards Alex Notify Administrator about this message?
