Your story about Peter CANTRELL is similar to a family story about my great great grandfather who lived in Gilmer Co. Ga. before and during the Civil War. My Peter was killed by the Jordan gang. However he was shot in the head on 22 July 1864 and buried in the laurel thicket on Burnt Mt. in an unmarked grave. His murderers were named and charged in an indictment by a grand jury in 1865 (Pickens Co. Ga.) as set out in Dale Ray JONES BOOK ON THE RAY AND JONES FAMILIES. The chapter is Book VII about Jonathan Davis Chastain who was Peter's Father in Law, see Page 538. The indictment was returned for the offense of murder with malice aforethought against the alleged killers named Benjamin JORDEN, Robert JORDON, James P. COLLINS, Marion BRANNON, James STARNES, Adam BRACKET, Wilson WATTS, Marion BRACKET, George ROBERTS, John WICKET and Thomas PEEPLES. My Aunt Betty Forest Stenger tells me that the killers were not tried. However, the story goes that one of the killers was caught and hanged and his murderer was tried and convicted. I do not have that name. The other accused killers left the country and were apparently never tried.
Peter CANTRELL was born in Spartanburg S.C. and had two wives, Martha Ann Chastain d. 1858 and Margaret J. Mealer m. 15 May 1859 b. in Tenn. The children of Martha Ann Chastain are Rachel Melvenia Kincaid m. William Robert Kincaid death certificate # 1325 d. 14 July 1944; Martha Ann Chastain b. 1857 m. my great grandfather Henry Harrison Forest. The children of Margaret J. MEALER are Mary Adeline Ellafair b. 1860 m. Benjamin F. Prince and Jefferson Davis b. 1863. Our ancestors lived in Ellijay and near Jasper Ga. in view of Sharptop Mt. near Grandview Lake.
I am interested in learning the names of Peter's parents, I have the lineage of Martha Ann Cantrell back through Pierre Chastain in the Revolutionary days. If you can share any info please e-mail me in Texas, katheidemann@aol.com or call 512-930-5927 days or 512-930-5871 evenings.
