While researching my ancestor Jacob Reese I abstracted a number of deeds in Gilmer County, Georgia that mention various folks named Reese.

I thought these might be of interest to other researchers?

Came before me Jacob Reece ... he saw James R. Findley sign seal & deliver; dated 20 February 1847
[William Whitmire’s wife Elizabeth was likely a Reese before her marriage and may have been a sister of Jacob Reese; Permelia’s relationship to Jacob Reese has not been proven, but perhaps she was his mistress?; at this time Jacob’s wife Susan was still living, but after Jacob’s death Permelia took Reese as a last name]

Gilmer Co., GA, Book H, p.384: James R. Findley to William Whitmire, for 1500; a family of Negroes consisting of five ... Gilmer Co., GA, Inferior Court Minutes, Book 1, 1835-1853 (LDS reel # 219514)

This book does not have any page numbers.

Gilmer Co. Inferior Court ... July 20, 1840
Ordered by the court that Jacob Reese, William Whitmire and Andrew J. Glenn be and they are hereby appointed Commissioners to lay off and designate the boundaries of a new Militia District to be made of the 794th G.M. Dist. and report to the Court forthwith ...
July 20th Day 1840
[Note that Jacob Reese was about 70 years old at this time]

[The following appears on the next page, dated the same day]
July 20, 1840
Jacob Reece, William Whitmire and Andrew J. Glen made their report
the boundaries were as follows ...
commencing at the northeast corner of the fifth District 2nd sec. running west with the north line of said District to the top of the dividing Ridge above Robert Kinkayd’s; thence with the top of said Ridge untill it intersects the line between Gilmer and Cherokee Counties, thence with the county line to the said northeast corner of the 5th Dist. of the Second Section
[Because this was reported on the same day that they were given the task, I assume they decided on these boundaries by looking at a map, rather than visiting the land]

Gilmer Co., GA, 3 Nov. 1840
Ordered by the Court that Cyrus Seay, Esqr., Jacob Reese and William Whitmire be and they are hereby appointed Standing Commissioners of Roads for the 979th G.M. Dist. November 3 Day 1840

[I was surprised that Jacob, aged 70, was picked for this duty; I also was curious whether his relationship with Permelia Sandlin – if it was outside the socially accepted norm – would have prevented his selection]

[This gets odder]
Gilmer Co., GA, 1 March 1841
Calvin T. Whitten, Esq., Nathaniel H. Goss and John Dilbeck appointed road commissioners for 979th Dist.
[This does not specifically say they were appointed in place of Seay, Reese and Whitmire, but that likely is the case. There is no explanation why these men were replaced after such a brief tenure]

Gilmer Co., GA, 5 May 1845
Ordered by the Court that the undersigned be ... appointed to act as standing commissioners to lay off and mark out a road in the 979 District G.M. leading from Whitmires Mill to Intersect the State Road leading of by Lumpkin County Leading from the Boced (?) Town settlement north to the Gilmer Line from thence the mos [sic] convenient way until it intersects the Road Leading to Ellijay
[signed] Samuel Clauts, Jacob Reece, John Langston
[At this point Jacob Reese was about 75 years old; also, I believe this is the first – and only – reference to a mill owned by William Whitmire?]

Gilmer Co., GA, 25 August 1845
Ordered by the Court that the commissioners Samuel Clouts, John Langston & Jacob Reece appointed commissioners upon a road leading from Brick (?) Town settlement to intersect the turnpike road ... suspend further operations upon said road until the regular term of the court of ordinary ... in September
[The minutes never mention this road again]
