Bruce, William R. - Lived in Jackson Co., born in KY

Hey y'all! I'm looking for information on my great-great grandfather, William R. Bruce. (I suspect the R stands for Robert, since "William Robert" and "William Wallace" seem to be popular first and middle names amongst Bruce families from Scotland.)

William R. Bruce was born in May 1846 in Kentucky. His mother's name is unknown, but she was from Ohio according to U.S. census records. I think her maiden name might have been Cooms, but I'm not 100% sure on that. His father is also unknown, but census records indicate he was from Scotland. Family lore indicates that William R. Bruce's parents died when he was young, and he lived with his aunt and/or grandmother. He did not get along with his relatives, so during the Civil War when the Union army came through Kentucky he joined up to "get away from it all." He fought in the Battle of Atlanta, and settled in Jackson County, Georgia after the war. He married Sarah Venable on 25 Dec 1874. Probably because one of Sarah's brothers was a Confederate veteran, plus the Venables are descended from a distinguished and very large Virginia family, while William R. Bruce was an orphan and a drifter, there was bad blood between Mr. Bruce and his in-laws, the Venables. William Bruce and Sarah Venable Bruce had seven children.

I am looking for anyone who might have information that would help me identify William R. Bruce's parents, family, and ancestors.

Many thanks,
Gwen Harrison
