Danny, I found a little on your McHale family... 1880 Census Hamilton County, TN ED 52, pg 93/211A Ward 5, Chattanooga McHold [sic], Mike, age 35, blacksmith, born Ireland, father born in Ireland, mother Ireland -, Mary, 33, wife, NY father France, mother France -, Walter, 11, son, GA Ire NY -, Agnes, 7, daughter, GA Ire NY -, Mikel, 5, son, GA Ire NY -, Maggie, 2, daughter, has the measles, born TN, Ire NY ---------------------------------- 1900 Census Jefferson County, AL ED 149, pg 14/217A McHale, Mary E., born May 1846, age 54, widowed, 10 children born, 4 are living, born NY, father and mother both born in Ireland -, Mike, son, born Aug 1874, age 25, born GA, father Ireland, mother born in NY -, Mary A., daughter, born July 1884, age 15, single, born GA, father Ire., mother NY --------------------------------------- 1920 Census Jefferson County, AL ED 109, pg 15a/209 McHale, Mary E., age 64, widowed, born NY, parents born Ireland ---------------------------------- United States military pension index: Mary E. McHale, filed February 1911 in Alabama for widow's pension based on the service of Michael L. McHale who enlisted 6 Apr 1866 in Company C, 5th US Cavalry. He was discharged in April 1869 and died March 1897 in Birmingham, AL. I would definitely send off for a copy of this pension application (available through online order at the National Archives in Washington). These very often will give names and birthdates of surviving children. No guarantees, but it will probably also give Mary and Michael's marriage date and place, her birthdate and place of birth, his birth date, place, time of immigration, death date and place of death. The government was pretty strict about making sure that the widow hadn't remarried and that her claim was valid. ------------------------------------- I don't know if this is the same man or not, but a Michael McHale, age 30, non-citizen, enlisted April 12, 1864 in Confederate service in Company B, 1st Mobile Volunteers in Mobile, AL. While it may be a coincidence, and this may not be your Michael McHale [the birthdate is a bit off] many Irish immigrants came through the port of Mobile in the years prior to the Civil War. ------------------------------------- For what it's worth, there is a death certificate available for a Mike McHale who died 17 Dec 1910 in Jefferson County, AL. This might be their son. I didn't see an obvious match for Mary McHale in the Alabama death certificate index. Her pension records will probably show when she died as benefits would have been discontinued at that time. Hope this helps and good luck in your search, Scott Notify Administrator about this message?
