I couldn't agree more. Dozens of listings that show Mastin to be the son of Matthew, but not a one of them shows any sources, nor do any of them show where they got the last name of Osborn (or variously Osborne, Osburn, Osbourne, etc.) Fer Elizabeth (also listed as Elizabeth Nancy or just Nancy.

Family traditions and unsubstantiated relationships are useful only for the purpose of providing clues to possibilities that must be documented to be of any real use in a genealogy.

I am the Arkansas State Genealogist for SAR (and also do a lot of work to help the local DAR Registrar), and I get a lot of applications that are "documented" by citing on-line family trees. Yes, it is most aggravating, but most of the folks that I see (with these application supported by on-line trees) know little or nothing about genealogy.

I end up doing a lot of the legwork.
