Gabaldon via Maximillian

My great-grandmother Josephina Gabaldon Windberg settled in El Paso, TX with her husband Karl Windberg (of Germany) around 1900. She was the only daughter of eight children from somewhere near Monterrey, Mexico. The family story is that Gabaldon came to Mexico with Maximillian. (This means they were probably French.) Gabaldon was a very prominent family and lived in grand style until Revolution forced the entire family to retreat from their 'estate' to Texas and New Mexico.
If anyone has more details about this story, please let me know.
Thanks.
