Donna.James M. " Tice" born 1868 Jackson Co. Ky. and Mathias Gabbard are the same person. The family did not know how old he was when he died so they guessed at his birthdate to put on the tombstone. The Sept 1869 date comes from census records and is the correct date of birth. James Mathias was a special needs child. He never married. Abijah Gabbard comes from a census takers interpretation of Hijah. His Nickname was High Gabbard. High Gabbard is on his tombstone but his name was Hijah. Lucy Gabbard born July 30 1884. Lucy died 12-18-1977 Married Clark Cunagin born 12-16-1876. Clark Cunagin's nickname was Budge. Lucy and Clark are buried in the Penile Cemetery in Jackson Co Kentucky. Family story from my 88 year old Aunt. James Mathias.. Tice and his Mother Liz were walking in the woods looking for mushrooms or gensane. They had gone a long distance from home and Liz said to Tice. "I think we are lost. I don't know the way home. Tice said" " If we are lost we might as well go back home" He took his mother by the hand and led her bact to their home. This was a favorite story in the Gabbard family. Abel, George,James Mathias, Sarah Sally Cunagin Gabbard, Greenberry, Levi, and Hijah Gabbard are all buried in the Gabbard Cemetery on Black Lick Road Parrot Ky. In Jackson Co.
