Gabbard Family Genealogy Forum

Vivian,
I have researched our family back to Forchtenberg, Germany. There in the 1500's the name was Gebhardt. Some of the family moved to Schwaigern, Germany in the 1600's and the spelling was changed to Gebert. In 1731, two brothers left Schwaigern for America. (The lady who at the time when I was there owned the hotel down the street from the church said there was a note in her Heimatsbuch from 1731 saying the two brothers left for America.) When they landed in Philly, the name was changed to Gabbert. Somewhere in VA, there was a split off and some of the family started spelling it Gabbard. I don't have exact details on dates as I was in Germany doing this research about 15 years ago and had a computer crash in the late 90's losing a lot of my notes. The paper is here somewhere...but where? LOL The previous post about Gabbard being Dutch for a garbage boat is, thankfully, untrue.
