I've been digging into this more. It is quite clear that there were TWO men named George Gabbert who settled in Mercer Co., KY.

George Gabbert (c. 1757-1821) was the brother of Michael and Peter Gabbert. George almost certainly must have served in the Virginia militia in the Rev War, as it would have been hard for him not to. However, he died before he ever applied for a pension. This George, along with Michael and Peter, was a son of Mathias and Christina (Kremer) Gabbert, and a grandson of Johann Friedrich Gebert who came to America in 1731. George remained in Virginia until the mid 1790s, when he moved to Lincoln Co., KY.

The second George Gabbert (1760-1851) was a son of Michael and Catherine (King) Gabbert. Born in Virginia, he lived in North Carolina in the 1780s, as his Rev War pension shows (our George never did). This George was a 2nd cousin to our George. His father, Michael Gabbert (1735-1790), was a son of Hans Michael Gebert, who came to America in 1731 with his brother Johann Friedrich Gebert.

Looking through www.familysearch.com and elsewhere shows that many researchers have confused the two Georges. :(
