David,
My father came from the Starngford Lough area.
He was born in 1899 in Castlespie Co.Down. His surname was spelled Gabbey.
The gabbey name also has spellings Gabbie,Gabby,Gaby, Gabey, and Gebbie amongst the different variations.
We believe the family originated from Galston East Ayrshire
in Scotland and that two brothers came across to Ulster in the early 1600s with Montgomery.
They came from a farm called Middlethird Thename there is, we believe spelled Gebbie.
