A Royal Marine is a British sea-going military unit (like the US Marines). If this guy was one of them, there would be military records in the United Kingdom. Check out a website or search engine using the phrase
Royal Marine". Something will definitely show up.

I think your Gabriel people lived in the area where France, Switzerland, and Germany all come together. This could be the French province (département) of Alsace-Lorraine. They could have been Catholic, but if they were Huguenot (French Protestant), you would have to look into Protestant records (usually much harder to find than Catholics).
