Greetings all. My name is Phil Gaughwin, came across this forum and I believe my father Michael has been in contact with members before. Our family is originally from Melbourne, Australia and are now based in Canberra. Re: Idendification of Gaughwins in Galway. We were recently in Dublin and took the time to visit the National Library, where parish records are kept dating back to the early 1800's. Following up on the records of Griffith's evaluation, we managed to find and copy records for births, deaths and marriages in the Parish of Taghboy/ Tobaigh, Clonfert dioscese, Fohenagh, from 1837-1877(record number: POS 2431). The earliest mention of the name 'Gaughwin' (spelling was accurate then and was consistently used) was March 9, 1827: Baptism of Michael Gaughwin, son of Dennis and Joan (nee Killby), with godparents Bridget Gaughwin and Matthias Thanrady. Additional records of births and marriages were obtained from 1828 - 1861 . The year 1858 was missing (no records). Earlier records than this were not available. Of interest was the observation of the spelling 'Gacquin' in the neighboring parish of Dysart (Elphin, also called Tissara / Dysart, Ballyforan): recording of the names Matthias, Maria and Joanne gacquin of Caladina. However I didn't follow up on this as I had limited time. If anyone is interested in following up on this, please get in contact with me and I will be happy to forward a written summary of additional details. In any case, those with the means/inclination to travel to Galway may benefit from visiting the parish of Taghboy / Tobaigh. Best, Phil Notify Administrator about this message?
