The man you are looking for is John Gately-Downey he was born in the parish of Taughmaconnell, Diocese of Clonfert, County of Roscommon, Ireland.
There is a good article on him in a publication called 'Taughmaconnell..a history' published by the Taughmaconnell Historical and Heritage Group in 2000. It should be possible to get a copy by writing to the Secretary of the Group at Taughmaconnell, Ballinaslor, Co. Roscommon, Ireland or check it out on the net. Good luck with your work.
