According to family tradition, my grfther came from NJ, but resided in NYS most of his life, dying in Albany NY (my home)in 1942. He was born in 1880, according to the family headstone at our plot. He married my grmother Ann Collins of Rockaway NY in c. 1898. At the time he was employed as a bartender at my grgrandfather's hotel there. They subsequently lived in Bath NY and Albany. There was always some question, in the family, as to whether he was Irish or French, altho I don't think my grgrandfather would have employed a non-irish bartender in what was an Irish-oriented resort.
Since this morning I did a google search for Collins of rockaway and what to my surprise did I find, along with my grgrandfather, but a reference to a Dan. Gaquin (sic)who received a licence to sell liquor in Rockaway in 1890. Altho presumably, my grandfather would have been too young (10 yrs old) to sell liquor even in those freer days, in light of the relative rarity of the name, it seems likely there is some connection, despite the alternate spelling, and his conncection with Rockaway was longer than my mother was aware of.
