I was able to obtain a Death Cert relatively easily for my grfather, this morning, since he died here in Albany. NY death certs list parents and their places of birth. However that info is generally supplied by the survivors and not always reliable. The DCert says he was born 2/22/1879 in Jersey City NJ. His father's name is given as Patrick Gacquin, (strengthening the supposition of Irish origin) bithplace Jersey City NJ and his mother's name Mary, maiden name unknown, bithplace just NJ. My mother believed her grandfather (Patrick) had run or owned a "pottery factory" in NJ. Next I will investigate trying ot get a birth cert from NJ, if they go back that far.
I suspect the identity of the mysterious Dan. Gaquinn will always remain a mystery. Tho' the more I think of it, it may not be improbable that an elven year old would be selling liquor in those days, as long as he paid the licence fee. I hesitate to think he would have lied about his age to my grandmother who was six feet tall in an age when women averaged 5'2'' and was an excellent rifle shot from her days working in a Rockaway boardwalk shooting gallery.
