My great grandfather, Frank Goodway, was born in Canada in 1833. His parents, names unknown were French speaking Canadians. I recently acquired a New York State certificate and record of marriage, in which one of Frank Goodway's descendants is referred to by the priest as Mary Gadbois rather than Mary Goodway.
I have always assumed that "Frank Goodway" was an anglicized name and now think it's likely that the name was Gadbois.
The 1861 Oswego City directory lists a Francis Goodway, employed as a boatman, living at 77 Niagara St., Oswego, NY. , so, assuming this is Frank, he must have left Canada prior to that date.
Do you have any family records that might include him? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Frank Goodway
