Gaddis of Allen Co KY, Smith/Macon Co TN
I am seeking information on William Gaddis b. 1825 TN and James Gaddis b. 1828 TN.
William Gaddis married Doretha Kirby, a daughter of John and Ann Brown Kirby born about 1828 in Smith Co TN, about 1854.Doretha/Olivia and sister America are living with older sister Susanna/Suky Kirby Goad in 1850, after their father remarried to Nancy Holcomb.
The Gaddis family is in Macon Co TN in 1860, Butler Co KY by 1870, and William then disappears. They had the following children:
Thomas b. abt 1855
Mary b. about 1856 (probably b. 1857 and same person as Margaret)
Margaret b. abt 1858
Sarah b. abt 1861
Lugita b. abt 1862
Samuel b. abt 1862 (probably twin to Lugita)
Berlotta b. about 1869
In 1880 Macon Co TN, Doretha/Dolly is listed as divorced and occupation as servant to Claiborne family.2 households away is Ada Gaddis given as adopted daughter of William and Nancy Haley, who might be a cousin: Ann Brown Kirby's mother was a Haley.Ada married Robert Underwood of Summer Co TN.Her 1962 Funeral Home records gives parents as William and Dollie Gaddis.
In neighboring 1880 Clay Co, Mary Gaddis is give as servant to Jesse Wood and living beside cousin Thomas M. Kirby.Mary married Thomas Watson of Allen Co KY.Her 1914 death certificate gives her parents as William and Dollie Gattis.
Sarah married Clarence Morgan Natcher of Sumner Co TN.After Morgan's death she became a cook at a Catholic school in Nashville, TN where her sons were educated. Her 1919 death certificate gives parents at William Gaddis and Dorothy Kirby.
Nothing is known about the other children.
In the 1880 Allen Co KY Center, James and Sarah Gaddis include William (age 3) and Virginia B. Kirby (age 5) as adopted children. My great-aunt Berneda Kirby Hughes vaguely recalls growning up around the Gaddis family and understood they were relatives of some type.
I am under the current assumption that James Gaddis of Allen Co KY might be a brother to William Gaddis.I have not discovered the parents of William or Virginia Kirby and have not found them in 1900 census.
Does anyone have knowledge of William and/or James relationship?I have not founddeath date for William.James' 1911 death certificate states his parents as John and Polly Gaddis. He is buried at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church in Allen Co KY where many Kirby's are buried.
Any help would be appreciated.
