Gaddy's of Buncombe County, NC
Hi!My name is Prentiss (Prent) Patrick, and here is my story: my father is Charles Harris Patrick, and his father was Roy McAllister Patrick. My grandfather, Roy, was adopted by Andrew Martin Patrick, of Orangeburg County, and later Dorchester County, SC.My adopted great-grandfather was a Station Master with the railroad, and was married to Ida N. Bullington, also from South Carolina.Mr. Patrick and Ms. Bullington could not have children, and they adopted my grandfather and another child, Hazel, in 1908.My grandfather was originally born Roy McAllister Gaddy, and was the son of one Sam Gaddy of Barnardsville, NC.My true great-gradfather was born (I think) between 1873-1878 and died in 1970.He is buried in out family cemetary in Barnardsville.Unfortunately, the headstone lists very little information. My great-grandfather's first wife, whom I know nothing about, died in childbirth while delivering my grandfather. My great-grandfather placed my grandfather in an orphanage temporarily while he searched for another wife.By the time he had remarried, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick had already adopted my grandfather. My grandfather did not find his father until he was in his 50's.My family members in Barnardsville were not extremely receptive to the news, as my great-grandfather had never mentioned anything about his previous marriage, or my grandfather, to his second wife or any of his children from that marriage.I have been able to trace my adopted great-grandfather as far back as census of 1900.Unfortunately, my goal right now is to trace my lineage and I have been unable to find any record of my great-grandfather Gaddy on any census or other online research avenue. It is quite possible that my great-grandfather relocated to Buncombe County, after the death of his first wife, from another North Carolina county, or even possibly, from South Carolina.I have tried for years to reconcile the logistical aspects of a couple from southeastern South Carolina adopting a child born, most likely, in the mountainous area surrounding Asheville, NC.Even though my adopted great-grandfather was man of some means, travel was not easily accomplished around the turn of century (unless his position with the railroad provided an extra outlet). If anyone has any information on Sam Gaddy of Barnardsville, NC - or if you even think you can help me in any way - I would greatly appreciate the information.I have a lot of information on my family background as to my relations via marriage as well.I am related to the Grants and McCrackens of the Charlotte, NC - Bennettsville, SC area, as well as the Canadays of St. George (George Township), SC.My great, great grandather (my father's, mother's, father's, father) was Louis O. Canaday of George Township, SC.
Thanks is advance!
Prent Patrick
