Octavius of Iowa, Union Soldier
Latest issue of "Military Images" journal (Vol. XXVIII, No. 5, March-April 2006, p.31) reproduces a carte de visite of Octavius B. Gaddy, Co. E, 29th Iowa Infantry Regiment. He enlisted as private 15 Aug 1862 at 25 years of age, from Fremont County, Iowa. Promoted from private to "eighth corporal" (number eight on the roster) 15 Jul 1865, and mustered out 10 Aug 1865 in New Orleans, according to the caption. Wearing uniform of a private soldier in the Union (Northern) army, thus probably taken shortly after enlistment Aug 1862. Good-looking young man, with what I was once told was the "Gaddy forehead and nose."
Hope someone can claim him--if so, there's a fine photo.
