Dorthea Gaedeke to Chicago, 1850s
Dorthea Margaretha Elizabeth Gaedeke was my ggg-grandmother.She was born 10 Sep 1812 in Hannover, Germany. Her first husband, Johann Heinrich Friedrich Nordbrock, died at sea on their way to the new world, probably in the early 1850s.She settled with her sons and her in-laws in what is now Lombard, Illinois (outside Chicago).
On 18 Aug 1857, she married Franz (Ernst) Rode (my ggg-grandfather) in Chicago. He died 29 Sep 1864 in Little Rock, Arkansas during the Civil War / War of Northern Agression. He was apparently quite tall for the time (6'3" from his war records); his future daughter-in-law, when she first saw him in church in his uniform as a child, thought he was a giant.
Dorthea & Ernst had one child -- Wilhelm Heinrich Franz (Frank) Rode, born 4 Oct 1855 (yes, I know the date is early...), who was a policeman/farmer/carpenter.
Dorthea died on Christmas day, 1890, and is buried in the Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery in Lombard. There is no marker remaining.
Any information on her, her family, or her ancestry would be appreciated.
