Shook Meth. Church & Cemetery-1889, Hopkins Co. TX

While driving in Sulphur Springs, Hopkins Co. TX. yesterday, I came across an cemetery named Shook Chapel Methodist Church which had a cemetery located behind it with late 19th century headstones erected and visible from Hwy 154 South towards Yantis. I hope someone is looking for this family in North Texas.

From what I've just read on the Gafford board, the name of A J Gafford, 1st Lieutenant, CSA seems to be the progenitor to this line. So, here are several GAFFORDS buried at Shook Methodist Church Cemetery, located on Hwy 154, ca 3 miles south of Sulphur Springs. The church had a State of Texas Historical marker according to the text, it was a early community to the area settled about 1889.

Fred Gafford b. June 28, 1873 - d. Feb 23, 1931 Single headstone
Majorie Gafford, b. Dec 10, 1873 - d. May 13, 1941 Single Headstone but side by side to Fred's.

Irby Gafford 1887 - 1970 Single headstone next to Majorie Gafford's.
Nellia Gafford 1885 - 1894 Single headstone next to Irby Gafford

Three in One GAFFORD: Next row up and to right of Nellia Gafford's
Harold O. "Mutt" -- b. July 31, 1917 d. Aug 12, 1946;
Mary Beth, --b. May 2, 1880--d. Jan 17, 1951;
Carmell H.-- b. Mar 30, 1883 d. Dec 4, 1957 end of names on larger headstone with 3 members.

Jeff Gafford b. Sept 7, 1914 - d. June 18, 1995 Single Headstone but next to Sibyl's
Sibyl Gafford b. August 3, 1916 d. No Date as of yet

The names below were in a Gafford Plot found immediately upon entering through a walk through gate.
A J Gafford, 1st Lt, Co D, 32 Tx Cav CSA
b. April 20, 1833 d. August 24, 1907... Also on the tombstone were letters inscribed in a circle, found bottom right hand corner of stone, but I don't know their meaning: K S H T W S S T starting at the 9 o'clock position. OR from 8 o'clock: T K S H T W S S etched/drawn within about a 4-5 inch circle.

Elizabeth Gafford 1846 - 1935 Single headstone

To the right of his single headstone: LOVE wife of A O Gafford, b August 30, 1879 d Sept 14, 1904
Next taller obelisk stone to the right: Lois Gafford Dau of A O & Love, b. Feb 26, 1902 d Oct 9, 1904

Other surnames I came across were Anderson, Beckham, Ferguson, Stone, Ross, Campbell, Jones, Miller to name a few. The cemetery is L shaped lying directly behind the Shook Methodist Church on the corner of Hwy 154 and a side street. The shorter leg of the L extends on the left side of the church building itself. Was just in the neigborhood visiting from Dallas, (Tx) for the afternoon and became intrigued as to the dates of the older headstones and surnames to be found!

Hope this helps someone! Cheers & Happy Hunting!
